To write an apa style bibliography, the list comprising of works cited should start be on a fresh page with a title in the center “References” at the end. You are required to maintain the entries in an alphabetical order based on the author’s last name (avoid any other punctuations or spaces). The initials of only the first and middle name are provided. In case the name of the author is not known, then the title should alphabetized without the use of any A, An, or The.
According to an APA annotated bibliography sample, the dates are spelled out based on the names of months in the text. They have to be abbreviated except for the months of May, June and July. Either of the following styles can be used: day-month-year style such as (22 July 1999) or the month-day-year style (July 22, 1999) and be consistent. Remember to add comma after year with the month-day year style unless there is space for another punctuation mark to be fitted.
When reports were made on typewriters, their APA annotated bibliography template showed the names of publications that were underlined. This is because common typewriters were not able to type in italic. Writing a bibliography by hand it is still important to underline the name of the publications. In case a computer is being used, then the names of publications should be italicized. However, it should be confirmed with the instructor whether underlining is preferred or italics.
According to annotated bibliography APA template, APA citations should employ indents that hang which is actually when the first line of a particular entry is flushed towards the left side of the document. Lines which follow subsequently are indented ½”.
The APA instructions specify using sentence-style capitalizing for the titles of articles or books, so it is important to capitalize only the first word of a title and a subtitle. The exceptions for this rule would be periodic title and names that are proper in a title which should be in capitals. The periodical title is run in title case and then the volume number. The number is also italicized along with the title. In case of more than one author, you can use an ampersand (&) before the writing the name of the last author. Supposedly, there are more than six authors you can list the first one and for the rest use et al.
Write the date of publication in parentheses right after the name of the author. Then write a period after the closing parenthesis. Don’t italicize, underline, or place quotes around the titles of brief works within longer works.
